The Alan Kurdi in Pozzallo, first reports of Libyans fleeing their country by sea

On board there are 32 migrants, rescued on Christmas night by the ship of the NGO Sea Eye, off the Libyan coast. Reports indicate that the majority are Libyan nationals.

The landing was authorized yesterday evening by the Interior Ministry, after evaluating the “vulnerable conditions” of those saved.

Among the migrants there are 10 minors and 5 women, of whom a pregnant. At the request of Italy, the European Commission has already started the relocation procedure.

According to the mayor of Palermo Leoluca Orlando, the Alan Kurdi ship rescued 32 Libyans and this was the first rescue of Libyan citizens fleeing their country, a dramatic confirmation of the very serious civil war situation said  Orlando reiterating Palermo’s willingness to welcome escaped people rescued from a ship bearing the city flag on the bridge.”
