Minor earthquake recorded in the UK

A 3.0-magnitude earthquake has been measured near Stockton-on-Tees, Teesside, with residents reporting being woken by the tremor.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) recorded the earthquake at a depth of 4.4km at 5.57am on Thursday, although the United States Geological Survey recorded a 2.8-magnitude tremor at a depth of 10km.

Thursday’s tremor was the largest of nine earthquakes already recorded by the British Geological Survey (BGS) this year.

The previous biggest tremor in 2020 was a 2.3-magnitude earthquake felt in Arnisdale in the Scottish Highlands on 7 January.

According to the BGS, between 20 to 30 earthquakes are felt by people in the UK each year, with a few hundred smaller ones recorded by sensitive instruments.

The largest known British earthquake occurred near the Dogger Bank in 1931, with a magnitude of 6.1.
