More than 30,000 cases of the new coronavirus have been reported in China, with over 600 deaths. At least 60 people have tested positive and been quarantined on a cruise ship off Japan’s coast.
The virus has killed 636 people and infected 31,161 in mainland China, the National Health Commission’s latest figures show.
The death toll includes 73 new deaths reported on Thursday.
Thirteen cases of coronavirus have now been reported in Germany.
One of 56 Italians evacuated from China’s Wuhan city has tested positive for the new coronavirus, the country’s Health Ministry said Friday.
The third case was confirmed at the Cecchignola military campus where evacuated people have been quarantined.
The man, who is in his 30s, was immediately referred to the Lazzaro Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases, the statement added.
It was the first Italian who tested positive.
The first cases of novel coronavirus in Italy were confirmed last Friday when two Chinese tourists were hospitalized.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said Thursday that his government was ready to take further action to avert the threat of the coronavirus after tests suggested an Italian national may have contracted the deadly disease. “We are talking about a health risk that requires us to make constant updates,” Conte said after a meeting at the Civil Protection Department on the coronavirus. “We have to be flexible and, if it is appropriate, upgrade our measures so that the threshold of maximum precaution is maintained”. Italy has suspended flights to and from China and passengers are being screened at airports to see if they have fever.
A third person in the UK who has tested positive for coronavirus is being treated in a London hospital.
It has been reported that the third patient is a middle-aged British man who contracted the virus in Singapore – although the Department of Health has not confirmed this.
