Prime Minister Signals Rethink on Controversial Planning Reform
Prime Minister Robert Abela has acknowledged that elements of a controversial planning reform proposed last summer went beyond what they should have been, admitting that certain provisions need to be removed. Speaking during an interview on Sunday, PM Abela said the government is now working to achieve “convergence” on the main pillars of the Bill. While maintaining that planning reform is necessary, he described the current proposal as an interim solution aimed at providing greater certainty to objectors and developers alike. Abela said parts of the draft legislation should be axed, even as others move forward. Among the less controversial measures, he cited proposals to regularise agricultural rooms built in fields and extensions to residences carried out before 1994, subject to payment. The Prime Minister said further changes will be considered as discussions continue. (The Malta Independent)

PN Going into Election Aiming to Win, Says Borg
Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg said the PN will contest the next general election with the clear objective of winning, dismissing suggestions that its aim should be limited to reducing Labour’s majority. Speaking on NET TV, Borg said the party had “got its house in order” by publishing its long-overdue accounts and maximising the value of its assets without selling off party clubs. He said there was renewed enthusiasm among supporters but stressed that the party must now raise its game. Borg said the PN must present itself not just as a strong opposition but as an alternative government ready to govern. He added that a general election could be called this year and the party must be fully prepared. Borg also announced an upcoming political podcast and a national, non-partisan convention next month. A 48-year-old woman has died and another, aged 23, was hospitalised after getting into difficulty while swimming in St Julian’s on Sunday. Police were informed of the incident at St George’s Bay at around 12.40pm and officers rushed to the scene. Initial investigations found that the two women, both from Kyrgyzstan, encountered trouble in the water and were assisted ashore by people in the area. A medical team and Civil Protection members were called in to provide assistance, and an ambulance took both women to Mater Dei Hospital. The 48-year-old was later certified dead, while the younger woman is reported to be in a stable condition.
