A growing number of Italian cities are under red heat alert

Italy and its island of Sicily

The number of Italian cities on red heat alert, when even the young and healthy are advised to stay out of the sun, is set to rise from 14 Sunday to 17 Monday, 19 Tuesday and 22 on Wednesday, the health ministry said.

The long heatwave Italy is enduring is set to intensify, it said.

When an area is on red alert, it means the heat is so intense it is a threat to active healthy people and not just vulnerable groups such as the sick, the elderly and young children.

The long heat wave has also affected mountain areas.
The temperature on Mt Blanc remained above zero for 33 hours at the weekend, the ARPA regional environmental agency for Val d’Aosta has said.

The agency said the effects of the air temperature have reached the summit of the 4,805 metre high Monte Bianco, western Europe’s tallest mountain.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been issued for bad weather Tuesday in the northern regions of Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta and in Alto Adige.
