A gunman reported to have been a student opened fire in a building at the University of North Carolina’s Charlotte campus on Tuesday, killing two people and wounding four others, three of them critically

Earlier an “active shooter” had been reported on the Charlotte campus of the University of North Carolina.

Students should “run, hide, fight”, the university said in a tweet. “Secure yourself immediately,” it added. “Monitor email.”

On its website it said that the campus was on lockdown and that students and staff should “remain in a safe location.”

Aerial shots from local television news outlets showed police officers running toward a building, while another view showed students running on a campus sidewalk.

The campus was to host a concert at the school’s football stadium.

Details of the violence remained hazy hours later after campus police officers responding to the call entered the building, disarmed the gunman and took him into custody.
