The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for snow which carries a potential risk to life as parts of England and Wales are braced for up to 10cm of snow to fall in two hours.
Already, cars have been abandoned and more than 100 are stuck on the A30 in Cornwall as the snow gets heavier. In the south west, drivers have been warned against all but essential travel.
British Airways also warned that the adverse weather conditions across parts of South East England on Friday 1 February, are likely to affect some of their short-haul flights.
“We recognise the uncertainty that the bad weather may be causing customers, and have therefore introduced flexible rebooking options for all customers on short-haul flights flying to/from London Heathrow,” they say.
“More information If you are due to travel on a short-haul service on Friday 1 February, regardless of whether your flight is currently showing as operating or not, you can rebook to travel up to and including Thursday 7 February.
“We are sorry for the potential disruption to your travel plans and are doing all we can to minimise the effect the poor weather may have on our flights.
“Please keep checking the very latest information about your flight before travelling to the airport as the situation could change at short notice.”
Rail cancellations and delays are predicted, rural communities could become cut off and there is a good chance power cuts will affect mobile phone coverage.
Train operators urged commuters to leave work early in order to avoid having their journeys impacted by the winter weather.
The warning covers London and south east England, the south west and Wales, but a map showing the amber warning suggests parts of Devon, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Dorset and south Wales will be among the worst affected.
