Emirates express disappointment after Airbus announced it will stop making A380s in 2021 (Updated)

Airbus announced that it will be stopping to make the superjumbo aircraft A380 as of 2021, citing problems to win clients as main source.

Airbus has on Thursday announced plans to scrap production of the A380 superjumbo, with the last of the jets to be delivered in 2021.

The world’s largest airliner, with two decks and room for 544 people in standard layout, was designed to challenge Boeing’s legendary 747 but failed to take hold as airlines backed a new generation of smaller, more nimble jets.

Airbus is in talks with unions over possible the possible impact on 3,500 jobs.

Emirates airline, the largest A380 customer, said on Thursday it had reached an agreement with Airbus to reduce its total order of A380 aircraft from 162 to 123 jets, and had signed a deal with the company to buy other jets. Emirates has said it is “disappointed” to have to give up its A380 order and that the jet “will remain a pillar of its fleet well into the 2030s”.
