Algeria’s antiquities museum looted during massive protests

Reuters reports that Algeria’s antiquities was, after a mostly peaceful protest on Friday, looted .The Algerian Culture Ministry said criminals and not the protesters were to blame.

The protests have become weekly occurrence after Abdelaziz Bouteflika the ailing and absent 82-year-old president announced he will be contesting the presidential election once more. His only concession was that he’ll stand down after just a year if he wins the election in April.

On Thursday he issued his first warning to protesters, saying the unrest, now entering its third week, could create chaos in the oil and natural gas-producing North African country. A few cracks have also started to appear on Bouteflika hold on power as there are reports that some members of the FLN in power have resigned.
