Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer launches bid to replace Merkel at CDU

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer on Wednesday launched her bid to replace Angela Merkel as the head of the Christian Democratic Union, and added that Merkel will remain chancellor as long as she has a majority in the Bundestag.

Merkel announced last week that she will give up the CDU leadership in December but plans to remain chancellor until the next election. Kramp-Karrenbauer, the general-secretary of the CDU, is a close Merkel ally and one of the favorites to replace her.

Horst Seehofer, leader of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Bavarian sister party, will resign from his role in the next few day, according to a German media report.

Sources told Die Zeit newspaper that Seehofer’s decision to leave the helm of the Christian Social Union (CSU) has been influenced by Merkel’s planned resignation from the leadership of her own party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
