Annual Company Law Conference 2025 to mark 30th Anniversary of the Companies Act

The Company Law Conference by the Malta Law Academy within the Chamber of Advocates returns this year with a landmark edition commemorating the 30th anniversary of Malta’s Companies Act, which came into force on the 1st of January 1995.

The conference, themed “The 30th Anniversary of the Companies Act 1995: A Commemoration and a Critique,” will be held on Wednesday, December 3rd, at the Aula Magna of the University of Malta’s Valletta Campus.

Organised and chaired by Dr David Fabri, the conference will once again bring together leading members of the legal community to reflect on three decades of company law in Malta, its achievements and the lingering challenges it continues to face within the local commercial landscape.

The event will open with introductory remarks by Dr David Fabri, followed by an opening address from Dr Peter Fenech, President of the Chamber of Advocates.

An introductory address will then be delivered by Hon. Judge Dr Ian Spiteri Bailey, who presides over the Commercial Section of the Courts of Malta.

The first session will continue with a historical overview presented by Dr Fabri, setting the stage for a conversation between Dr Geraldine Spiteri Lucas, Registrar of Companies, and Dr Ingrid Hamilton, Official Receiver, offering valuable insights into the practical administration of company law.

Following a short coffee break, Dr Kris Borg and Dr Arthur Galea Salomone will deliver talks on the subject followed by panel discussions led by distinguished legal practitioners including Dr Diane Bugeja, Dr Conrad Portanier and Dr Ivan Vella, who will also serve as moderator.

The conference will conclude with a closing address by former Judge Dr Toni Abela, reflecting on the Companies Act’s impact and its future trajectory.

This annual gathering has established itself as a key forum for discussion and reflection on company law developments in Malta. The 2025 edition promises to be particularly significant as it celebrates three decades since the enactment of one of Malta’s most pivotal pieces of legislation, shaping its corporate and commercial landscape.
