Argentina has announced a prohibition on all internal and international commercial flights until the end of August in its efforts to fight off the deadly oronavirus pandemic. The authorities directed airlines not to sell any tickets for flights for the next four months.
This decision was met with consternation and concern by industry groups who insisted that thousands of jobs could be lost as a result.
The country has closed its borders to non-residents last months, and imposed among the toughest quarantine measures worldwide. So far, 4,000 infections were confirmed, with just under 200 lives lost.
Argentina’s National Civil Aviation Administration insisted that this deadline was “reasonable” explaining that the aim of the decree was to prevent airlines from ticketing flights not approved by the Argentine authorities.
IATA, the international aviation agency said that this decision breached bilateral agreements and put more than 300,000 jobs at risks. Most countries in South America have stopped commercial flights, but the ban announced by the Argentinean Government is the longest so far.
