Athletics Malta has launched the Malta National Road Running Series for 2024-2025, which has been expanded to six races with the involvement of local clubs in the organisation of the events.
This series, which crowns Malta’s road running individual and club champions, will include three 5km races and three 10km races in different localities, with the final race on each distance also doubling up as the National Championship on the distance.
Following the success of the Series during the previous seasons, Athletics Malta will be expanding the league to six races, three of which will be organised by local clubs. This will elevate local road racing since all events will need to be certified by World Athletics to be considered to form part of the Running League series. This certification not only adds to the quality of the race but also ensures that any timings achieved would be considered valid for the purposes of national and age category records as well for qualification standards for international events.
In addition, the Road Running League Series will offer mass participation opportunities, allowing amateur and recreational runners to compete alongside established athletes and earn participation medals across tge official competitions. This initiative will further promote and strengthen grassroots sports in Malta, creating an inclusive, yet competitive atmosphere for all participants.
The league will start on 27th October with a 10km race hosted by Pembroke Athleta in Ta’ Qali. It will be followed by two 5km races, organised by Evolve Endurance Club in Ta’ Xbiex and by Rush AC in Safi on 17th November and 1st December respectively. The fourth race will take athletes on a 10k route in Ħal Far on 19th January 2025.
The league will then reach its climax on 16th February and 16th March respectively, with Athletics Malta hosting the final two races in Ta’ Qali, with both events also serving as the National 10km and 5k Championship respectively.
Evolve Endurance Club took the honours in last season’s Road Running League in both male and female categories, while Joelle Cortis and Dillon Cassar claimed the individual titles representing Mellieħa AC.
