Thea Parnis Coleiro and Warren Zammit were crowned Athletes of the Year by local athletics club Rush AC in the traditional awards ceremony which brought to an end a successful calendar year for this club.
Parnis Coleiro received this accolade after a number of tremendous performances this year culminating with a gold medal in the 60m dash in the European Kids Athletics Games in Brno where she also won the Best Technical Achievement Award of the Games in her category from a highly competitive field of international competitors. In the same Games, she also claimed the silver medal. in the long jump. Throughout this year, Thea also made it to the adult national team, the youngest athlete on the group.
On the other hand, Warren Zammit obtained several significant results throughout the year establishing himself as one of the top sprinters in Malta and an important element in the national team.
Throughout the ceremony, during which new and old members of the club gathered together with friends and family to celebrate their personal and club’s accomplishments, a number of category awards were also handed out. The winners were Rachel Marie Galea and Luca Martini (Under 23), Zaida Pace and Kurt Zahra (U20), Elisa Cutajar, Kareem Chouhal and Isaac Bonnici (U18), Bianca Shoemake and Luca Gerada (U16), Cheziane Debattista and Owen Borg (U14) and Leah Frendo and Kurt Ciantar (U12).
Club President Claudette Caruana said: “Throughout the year we have seen several of our athletes obtain extremely encouraging performances winning a number of medals at the National Championships and other meetings throughout the year. Seeing our athletes on the podium abroad brings incredible pride. This success is the fruit of the commitment of Club officials, coaches, athletes and their supporting families. We are encouraged that as a Club we are contributing to the growth and success of athletics in Malta, and we look forward to build on this throughout the coming year”.
