Austria election set for September 29th

Austria’s cabinet has set Sept. 29 as the date of the next parliamentary election.

That was the first date on which the vote could have been held after parliament passed a bill last month ending the current legislative period.

Austria has named a top lawyer, Brigitte Bierlein, to be interim chancellor – the first woman to occupy the post – ahead of early elections.

She replaced Sebastian Kurz, whose government lost a confidence vote in parliament over a video sting scandal.

The scandal involved Kurz’s far-right ally Heinz-Christian Strache, secretly filmed offering public contracts to a woman posing as a Russian oligarch’s niece.
