Belgium to recognise Palestine at the UN General Assembly

Belgium will recognise a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly session opening on 9 September, Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot announced. This move places Belgium alongside Australia, France, Canada and the UK, all seeking to increase pressure on Israel to end the war in Gaza and address the humanitarian crisis.

Prévot confirmed that Belgium will also impose 12 national sanctions on Israel, describing the situation as a “humanitarian tragedy” and condemning Israeli violations of international law. Measures include a ban on settlement products, restrictions on public procurement with Israeli firms, and limits on consular assistance for Belgians
