In an interview with AP, the former speaker of Britain’s House of Commons John Bercow said that Brexit is a historic mistake.
He thinks leaving the European Union is Britain’s “biggest foreign policy blunder” since World War II, an error that will leave the country weakened economically and diplomatically.
“We’re in a world of power blocs and of trade blocs,” Bercow said in the interview. “And it makes more sense for the U.K. to be part of that power bloc called the European Union and part of that trade bloc called the European Union.”
Bercow says it would be “perfectly reasonable” for Parliament to put Johnson’s deal back to the people in a referendum.
He said there’s a strong argument that “the process started with the people in the form of the 2016 referendum, and it should finish with the people in the form of a referendum in 2020.”
“I don’t see how more democracy can be undemocratic,” he added.
