Brexit – The highlights and how the British Press reported Wednesday’s events

Wednesday proved to be a rather eventful day in terms of the Brexit issue.

In the morning British Prime Minister Theresa May said it would not be right for Britain to take part in May’s European elections and confirms she has written to the EU’s Donald Tusk requesting an extension of Article 50 until 30 June. “As prime minister, I am not prepared to delay Brexit any further than 30 June”, she said.

During the day reports said that May has strongly hinted she will quit if forced to accept a long delay to Brexit, dramatically staking her premiership on tomorrow’s EU summit.

Eventually, European Council Donald Tusk said that Theresa May’s request to delay the U.K.’s departure from the EU will only be granted if the House of Commons passes the Brexit deal agreed between London and Brussels.

In the evening Prime Minister Theresa May said on Wednesday evening the delay to Article 50 is a “great personal regret” and that “it is now time for MPs to decide”. In her statement to the country, May said “I am not prepared to delay any Brexit any further than the 30th June.
