British Airways suspends flights to Egypt as a security precaution

The British government issued a travel warning for Egypt on Saturday citing a “heightened risk of terrorism against aviation,” as British Airways and German carrier Lufthansa suspended flights to Cairo as a security “precaution.”
Following the BA announcement, German airline Lufthansa suspended two flights from Frankfurt and Munich to Cairo on Saturday
British Airways flights were suspended for seven days, while Lufthansa flights will resume on Sunday.
It is understood BA made the Department for Transport aware of its decision ahead of the announcement.
A government spokesperson said: “We are aware that British Airways is notifying passengers that it has decided to suspend flights to Cairo temporarily.”
BBC said that a spokesman for Cairo airport told the BBC the airport had yet to be notified by BA of any such changes.
A BA spokesman said: “We constantly review our security arrangements at all our airports around the world, and have suspended flights to Cairo for seven days as a precaution to allow for further assessment
The British Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel by air to and from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, but has not issued similar warnings against air travel to and from Cairo.
“An estimated 415,000 British nationals visited Egypt in 2018,” according to the website’s advice page, which was last updated on after the news on Saturday. “Most visits are trouble free.
