British major trade unions agree that Labour should demand a 2nd Brexit referendum and campaign for Remain

Labour-affiliated trade unions have agreed the party should campaign for a second EU referendum and support Remain if a new Tory PM negotiates a fresh Brexit deal.

Labour should also campaign for another public vote – and support staying in the EU – if the UK is set for a no-deal Brexit, union leaders unanimously decided at a meeting.

The position agreed by unions including Len McCluskey’s Unite leaves open the possibility of Labour negotiating its own Brexit deal if it wins power in a general election, and then campaigning to implement it.

The Independent that there was no immediate official response from the party or leader Jeremy Corbyn to the union agreement.

It is expected that the union move will be discussed by Labour’s ruling National Executive Committee and shadow cabinet in separate meetings on Tuesday, though it is not known how soon an official change in policy could be agreed.
