Brussels police arrest 40 after violent protests against Belgian, French far right

Police arrested 40 people after protesters attempted to storm the Brussels headquarters of the far-right party Vlaams Belang following a book signing by French far-right leader Jordan Bardella.

Authorities said that on Wednesday evening, “a few hundred people” gathered at the Hungary House for the event, later moving to the nearby Vlaams Belang office. Police intervened as protesters tried to force their way in, throwing garbage and damaging property.

Vlaams Belang leader Tom Van Grieken posted videos of the incident, claiming protesters also tried to set fire to a building. He accused left-wing activists of attacking democratic values, stating they resort to violence when they can’t defeat nationalist parties at the polls.
