Businesses should get a Brexit “tax holiday” to help them weather the impact of a potential no deal, according to the Confederation of British Industry.
The lobby group’s director general Dame Carolyn Fairbairn said more flexibility over when to pay the taxman would help companies manage their cash flow if trading is disrupted by an abrupt exit at the end of next month.
It would echo moves by former chancellor Alistair Darling in the aftermath of the financial crisis in November 2008.
Dame Carolyn said: “Some of the biggest issues for firms will be around cash. It will be around the challenges of not being able to move goods to be able to trade quickly and easily, and you will find some firms very seriously challenged in terms of cash flow.”
