Catalan politicians and activists transferred to Madrid ahead of trial

Spanish authorities on Friday transferred nine politicians and activists from prisons in Catalonia to Madrid, days ahead of their trial.

The trial of 12 former government officials, lawmakers and civil leaders (three of whom are out on bail) will get underway at the Supreme Court in Madrid on February 12, the court said Friday. It is expected to last about 3 months, a court official told AP.

Spain’s public prosecutor is seeking prison terms of up to 25 years on charges of rebellion and misuse of public funds during Catalonia’s push for independence.

“We’ve sought to be heard for a long while, but they silenced our voices and image with jail,” former Catalan Foreign Minister Raül Romeva told Reuters in a letter ahead of the transfer. “We see the trial as an opportunity to address public opinion and society in Catalonia, Spain and obviously at an international level.”
