China anger as US amends wording on Taiwan independence

The US State Department has removed a statement from its website that previously said Washington does not support Taiwan’s independence, sparking criticism from China. Beijing condemned the change, calling it a “wrong signal” to pro-independence forces and urged the US to “correct its mistakes.”

The update, described by the US as “routine,” maintains commitment to the “One China” policy, recognising China rather than Taiwan. However, the revised factsheet now states that the US supports Taiwan’s membership in international organisations “where applicable.”

Taiwan’s Foreign Minister welcomed the update, calling it “positive and Taiwan-friendly.”
