Good evening,

These are the main news as reported by Malta’s news portals.

The Customs Department announced a huge haul of cocaine at the Malta Freeport. Newsbook says officers found 60 kilogrammes of drugs in a container originating from Latin America, with a market value of some €11 million.

Net News reports on another story from the Freeport, as a man was involved in a work incident and suffered severe injuries. The 60-year-old was rushed to Mater Dei for treatment, but it has not yet ben established what caused the incident.

Planning has started on a project to build 550 residence units for social accommodation, funded by the IIP. TVM quotes Prime Minister Joseph Muscat who described the programme the biggest project of its kind in recent history. One News said that the Housing Authority is carrying out a profiling exercise with applicants.

Two men are accused of injuring two staff members and a boy in the fight that broke outside the Pembroke school on Monday. The Times says that the father and uncle of a student showed up at the school after the boy told them he was being bullied by a schoolmate.

Partit Demokratiku will object with the Planning Authority on a proposed nine-story hotel in the area of Palazzo Zamitello and Villa Frere in Pietà. The Shift News says that conservation groups have also expressed concern about the damaging effect of the development on the historic site.

A police officer was left with a broken finger after a French student was trying to avoid arrest. LovinMalta said the 22-year-old fled when he was spotted defecating in public by officers on the beat. The police gave him chase and, when caught, reacted violently and broke the officer’s finger.
