A quick glance at the main forthcoming events in the European Union including EU Council, Commission and Parliament meetings and other EU-related conferences and events. Events for the week of 1 to 7th July 2019
On Monday, Finland takes over the six-month rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 July 2019. As holder of the presidency, Finland will chair the Council’s meetings of ministers and meetings of working groups and experts.
Tuesday 2 July, European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg, France. This is the first session of the new Parliament during which the MEPs will select eight tellers who will oversee the election of the President and set the deadline for the submission of candidacies for Parliament’s Presidency.
Wednesday 3 July, the 6th meeting of the EU-Africa economic and social stakeholders’ network opens in Brussels. During the meeting a political declaration will be adopted by the network to be addressed to the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and the African Union.
In Strasbourg, France, European Parliament plenary session will elect the President of the European Parliament at 9 am. The election is held by secret ballot. After the election of the President, Parliament will elect the other two main political bodies necessary for the functioning of Parliament’s activities: the 14 Vice-Presidents and then the five Quaestors. Parliament will vote on the numerical composition of its standing and sub committees at around 13.00h. Nominations will be decided by the political groups and announced in plenary later that day. The committees will convene the following week for their constitutive meetings to elect their Chairs and Vice-Chairs.
Thursday 4 July, MEPs to debate outcome of the June 2019 European summits: MEPs will debate the results of the 20-21 and 30 June summits with European Council President Donald Tusk and Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Thursday morning.
The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will host the presentation of the ‘Integrating the European pillar of social rights into the roadmap for deepening Europe’s Economic and Monetary Union’ study. This study, on behalf of the EESC Workers’ Group, explores the possibility of establishing 3 policy instruments to implement the European pillar of social rights (EPSR) and rebalance the economic and social dimensions of the EMU.
President Jean-Claude Juncker, together with the College of Commissioners, will be in Helsinki, Finland to meet Antti Rinne, Prime Minister of Finland for an informal dinner on the occasion of the beginning of the Finnish Presidency of the Council of the EU.
Friday 5 July, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini will be in Poznań, Poland to participate in the Western Balkans Summit Poznań 2019. Federica Mogherini will then go to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan to participate in the closing ceremony of the EU-Central Asia Forum.
