A quick glance at the main forthcoming events in the European Union including EU Council, Commission and Parliament meetings and other EU-related conferences and events. Events for the week of 13 to 18 May 2019..

Monday 13, the EU Green Week 2019 opens.

The EU Green Week 2019 will include events across Europe, and a high-level summit in Brussels from 15 to 17 May. The closing of Green Week will take place at the end of the Brussels conference and will showcase the political conclusions from the week.

On the same day, in Brussels, the Safety in Aviation Forum for Europe – SAFE 360 opens. Safety in Aviation Forum for Europe – SAFE 360° is an innovative conference format that provides the audience with an all-round multi-sectorial picture of the safety issues, a focused examination of key risk areas and a toolbox of potential mitigations. SAFE 360° is organised by the EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).


Also in Brussels in Monday, the Foreign Affairs Council will start with a discussion on current affairs, allowing ministers to review pressing issues on the international agenda.

The Council will discuss Libya, starting with an exchange of views with the UN Secretary- General’s Special Representative Ghassan Salamé. This discussion will focus on recent developments in the country and possible steps that the EU could take to avoid further escalation of the conflict. The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini chairs the Eastern Partnership Foreign Ministers meeting and attends the celebratory leader’s dinner on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership in Brussels.

Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Commissioner Karmenu Vella will be in Warsaw, Poland to open the Green Week 2019.


Tuesday 14 May, the Foreign Affairs Council (Defence) meets in Brussels. Foreign ministers and defence ministers and will have a discussion on the Sahel with their counterparts of the G5 Sahel countries (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger). On the same day, Agriculture and Fisheries Council meets in Brussels. The Council will discuss the post 2020 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform package.
President Jean-Claude Juncker delivers the opening speech at the High-Level Conference on the 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership and receives Mr Joseph Daul, President of the European People’s Party (EPP).


Wednesday 15 May, the 543th plenary session of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will meet in Brussels. On the same day, the European Committee of the Regions opens the stock-taking meeting on ‘Digital Europe for all’.During this stock-taking meeting the local and regional organisations and stakeholders will be able to discuss with the representatives of the European Commission, the future EU digital strategy aiming at scaling up and sharing digital solutions and measuring progress of the deployment of digital innovation across many sectors of local economy, services, and democracy. Special focus will be given to the needs of the smaller and less digitally-advanced cities and communities regarding their digital development. In Bucharest, Romania, the 7th ASEM Education Ministers’ Meeting opens.The theme of ASEMME7 is „Connecting education: inclusion, mobility and excellence in support of the Sustainable Development Goals”. In order to ensure a successful and focused ministerial debate for ASEMME7, we sought to strengthen our collective action to achieve SDGs, especially SDG4, and reinforce global political commitment to education.


President Jean-Claude Juncker participates in the Christchurch Call Meeting, co-hosted by Mr Emmanuel Macron, President of France and Ms Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, in Paris, France. Commissioner Vella attends the Green Week 2019 Brussels Conference on Environmental Implementation Review (EIR), in Brussels.


Thursday 16 May, in Lisbon Portugal, the European Maritime Day 2019 – conference is inaugurated. The focus of the European Maritime Day 2019 (EMD) will be on blue entrepreneurship, innovation and investment to transform traditional maritime sectors and boost emerging technologies and value chains. A specific focus will be put on research and innovation for a plastic-free ocean. The EMD is the annual EU meeting point on maritime affairs and blue growth. It targets maritime professionals, entrepreneurs and ocean leaders from academia, NGOs, businesses, governments and public institutions. The event will be opened by Commissioner Karmenu Vella and he will attend the launch of the Lisbon Green Capital 2020 programme.


In Brussels, the Joint conference of the European Commission and the European Central Bank on European financial integration and stability is held.Each year, the European Commission (EC) and the European Central Bank (ECB) organise a joint high-level conference on European financial integration and stability. This year’s conference will devote specific attention to the international role of the euro. Other sessions will focus on the challenges to EU banking and capital markets in the digital age.

EC Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis and ECB Vice-President Luis de Guindos will give keynote speeches at the conference. Key policymakers, financial market and industry leaders, and renowned academics will discuss the international role of the euro and challenges to banking and capital markets in several high-level panel sessions.

On this occasion, the European Commission will release its annual European financial stability and integration review.

On the same day in Brussels, the European Commission is organising this year’s annual forum to promote diversity and inclusion at the workplace:”United in Diversity – a common challenge” EU Diversity Charters’ Annual Forum 2019.The European Commission is organising this year’s annual forum to promote diversity and inclusion at the workplace.


Friday 17 May, the Economic and Financial Affairs Council is held in Brussels. Ministers will hold a debate on digital taxation in the international context. The Council presidency and the Commission will present the main outcomes of the G20, IMF and World Bank spring meetings and finalise preparations for the June G20 meeting in Japan. The Commission is also set to present the outcome of the first meeting of the coalition of finance ministers for climate actions.The Council will try to reach a political agreement on a set of new excise duty rules applicable in the EU regime. Ministers will discuss the general arrangements for excise duty and the specific regime applicable to alcohol and alcohol beverages.
