Eurovision : Malta makes it to the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2019

United Kingdom : Theresa May will set out the timetable for her departure following one final attempt to get her Brexit deal passed by MPs.

Dubai: Three British persons and a South African have been killed after a small plane crashed near Dubai Airport.

Australia: Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison is on course for defeat at this weekend’s national election.

Belgium: Following a ruling delivered by a Brussels court, former Belgian king Albert must undergo a court-ordered paternity test.

Germany: German chancellor Angela Merkel insisted she has no other political ambitions once her mandate expires.

Israel: Madonna will perform during the final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv, it has finally been confirmed.

Ukraine: The inauguration date for Ukraine’s president-elect Volodymyr Zelensky has been set for May 20 during a parliamentary session in Kiev.

Mexico: A Mexican journalist specialised in crime reports was shot dead in the Mexican beach resort of Playa del Carmen on Mexico’s Caribbean coast.

Boeing: Following two fatal crashes within five months, Boeing has completed development of a software update for its 737 Max plane.

These are the headlines from Malta’s newspaper front pages.

The Times reveals that Air Malta has reopened a board to review complaints about unjust decisions suffered by employees. The Ministry of Tourism confirmed the decision and said that similar boards in 2014 and 2017 investigated just under 700 claims.

The Malta Independent covers a debate between MEP candidates Frank Psaila and Cyrus Engerer. PN candidate Psaila said that people are afraid to speak out against the government while PL candidate Engerer said that the PN MEPs undermining the country’s success.

The Times says a man from Valletta is being accused of setting the historic St Publius Arch on Fire in Floriana in April. The man, 33, was caught on CCTV driving up to the site at least twice.

The Malta Independent reports on an attempted robbery case in which a man and a woman tried to steal another woman’s bag. The man, a former policeman, hit the victim with an iron bar causing her injuries on the head and arm.

L-Orizzont speaks to Justice Commissioner Vicky Scicluna who said that the 2015 drugs law helped more than 100 persons with substance abuse problems, 50 of whom successfully overcame their addictions.

In-Nazzjon leads with the progression of Maltese Eurovision representative Michela Pace to the festival’s finals. The paper says the young artist from Gozo delivered a wonderful performance to book her place in Saturday’s event.

L-Orizzont says that €24 million are being injected into a regeneration programme to upgrade housing units in the lower part of Valletta. Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi said that the project includes also the restoration of historical sites.

In-Nazzjon quotes PN Leader Adrian Delia who said the party will continue to defend Malta’s right to decide its own corporate tax rates. Delia was speaking at a political activity ahead of the MEP and local council elections.
