Good morning,

These are the headlines from Malta’s Newspapers:

The Times leads with concerns raised by NGO Mid-Dlam għad-Dawl, which works with inmates, following the alleged mistreatment of detained migrants that took part in the Ħal Far riots. The organisation is demanding an investigation.

The Independent publishes figures by the Electoral Commission showing that €815,000 were spent to fly in 525 Maltese citizens and their dependants to vote in May’s elections. The Commission said that the elections cost a total €7 million.

L-Orizzont quotes Prime Minister Joseph Muscat during a political event on Sunday who proposed discussions about raising the age of compulsory schooling. Muscat said that consequences must be considered, but there are ‘strong arguments’ in favour.

In-Nazzjon covers a protest on Sunday by Senglea residents against development plans by the American University of Malta. The paper says that demonstrators called out the absence of their mayor.

The Times says that sources in the legal profession were surprised by the decision of lawyer Arthur Azzopardi to drop Vince Muscat as a client. Azzopardi had only taken up the case of the suspect in Caruana Galizia’s murder in July.

The Independent carries an interview with General Workers’ Union secretary general Josef Bugeja who urged the government to show more ‘courage’ in discussions related to conditions of work.

In-Nazzjon publishes a statement by the PN criticising the government’s track record in the education sector. The party said that Prime Minister Joseph Muscat ended up trying to defend a crisis created by his own administration.

L-Orizzont speaks to the Permanent Secretary within the Family Ministry who warned that vital economic sectors would suffer if non-Maltese workers had to leave. Another article discusses the conditions at the Ħal Far open centre with the African Media Association Malta.
