USA: A man was arrested  after entering St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York carrying two cans of fuel, lighter fluid and butane lighters, according to the New York Police Department. The unidentified 37-year-old man had pulled up in a minivan outside the cathedral on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, walked around the area, then returned to his vehicle and retrieved the fuel and lighter fluid.

Libya: Germany on called for a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the escalating conflict in Libya after the 15-member body failed to agree on a draft resolution calling for a ceasefire.

Israel : Israel’s president Reuven Rivlin nominated Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to head the next government, after he won the backing of a majority of members of parliament following an April 9 election.

Madeira: At least 28 people dead in tourist bus crash on Portuguese island of Madeira, national news agency says.

 

These are the stories featuring on Malta’s newspapers’ front-pages. 

The Malta Business Weekly leads with an agreement between the University of Malta and Nato to conduct research on quantum cryptography. Nato is preparing for security solutions to new threats that could emerge with quantum computing.

The Times reports that Malta fell to 77th place in World Press Freedom Index, from 65th the year before. This represents the third sharpest drop in the EU and Balkan region, after Serbia and Macedonia.

The Malta Independent sent questions to the church about the proposed cremation law. The church said that cremation is permitted but ashes must be laid to rest in a place of burial, not scattered.

The Malta Business Weekly carries a story by leading identity verification provider Trulioo that it has now added Malta to its network. The service digitizes and automates due diligence processes and is used in several sectors.

The Times says that the police are investigating the reappearance of an underground dog-fight ring. PN MP Mario Galea said in parliament on Tuesday that the illegal activity has made a return in recent months.

The Malta Independent quotes Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini who warned that Islamic terrorists are crossing into Europe on board migrant boats and insisted that rescue ships will not be allowed to dock in the country’s ports.

L-Orizzont carries an interview with a woman who lost her baby soon after birth. The paper says that Holy Week resuscitates the agony in mothers who have gone through the experience of losing a child.

In-Nazzjon quotes Opposition Leader Adrian Delia who said that the Opposition agrees in principle with connectivity between Gozo and Malta, but wants assurances on its social impact on Gozo, the environment and good governance.

L-Orizzont quotes Transport Minister Ian Borg who said that the construction of new road networks represents a ‘transportation revolution’ in Malta. He said that the projects will contribute to an estimated €1.2 billion in tangible benefits.

In-Nazzjon covers a press conference by the Nationalist Party accusing the government of issuing higher and more frequent utility bills. Addressing the media, Deputy Leader David Agius said that the government failed in its promise to lower bills.

Champions League : Tottenham reached the last four of this competition for the first time since 1961/62 on a thrilling night at the City of Manchester Stadium, even though they lost 4 – 3. Liverpool completed a 6-1 aggregate win against Porto to book a semi-final against Barcelona.
