Corporate Dispatch Morning Briefing

Good morning,

Your morning briefing with the latest from Malta, Europe and around the world.

The main news of the day, an explosion outside Egypt’s National Cancer Institute (NCI) killed 17 people and injured 32, Egypt’s health ministry said Monday. The ministry said the explosion was caused by a car driving against traffic, colliding with three other cars.

The headlines from Malta’s newspaper follow.

The Malta Independent leads with Eurostat figures showing that 30 percent of people in Malta could not afford a week-long holiday away from home in 2018. The rate is higher than the EU average of 28 percent.

The Times reports that women make three-fourths of applicants for social accommodation. A profiling exercise conducted by the Housing Authority found that there were some 1.700 single mothers on the social housing waiting list in 2018.

The Malta Independent speaks to activist Ryan Vella from Għaqda Siġar Maltin who argues that trees must be planted in urban centres, not just in green areas. Vella insisted that any transplantation should be done in winter when trees are dormant.

The Times says that a call for applications for State Attorney will be issued within a few weeks, with the final appointment decided by the Prime Minister. The new office will take up legal counsel functions currently performed by the Attorney General.

L-Orizzont carries an interview with a 29-year-old woman, two years after she attempted suicide. She said people around her generally know her a cheerful person and do not know about her struggles with depression.

In-Nazzjon publishes a story about discrimination claims against inmates at Corradino Correctional Facilities. The paper says that the management is ‘bullying’ a prisoner who refused to be transferred to a division with poor conditions.

L-Orizzont quotes Prime Minister Joseph Muscat who said he will make sure that the coming budget will continue to find ways to reduce expenses for people. Speaking about last week, he said government was focused on the country’s infrastructure.

In-Nazzjon says that 40 migrants aboard rescue ship Alan Kurdi disembarked in Malta after the Italian government closed its ports. The paper says that the new arrival brings the number of rescued migrants in Malta this year to 1,150.
