These are the main stories featuring on today’s newspapers.

The Times speaks to Bank of Valletta Chief Business Development Officer Kenneth Farrugia who said that a part of the money stolen on Tuesday may not be retrieved. He told the paper that all transactions have been traced but special procedures have to be implemented to reverse them.

The Malta Independent also reports on the cyberattack on Bank of Valletta and says that only a part of the bank was actually targeted. The bank’s decision to shut down the entire operation was a precautionary measure.

L-Orizzont says that BoV shutdown caused minimal disruption to business, affecting mainly payments between third-parties. The paper says that, after the incident, GRTU CEO Abigail Mamo called for greater diversification in the banking sector.

The Times quotes Ombudsman Anthony Mifsud who said that promotions within the Armed Forces were ‘vitiated’. Investigating the series of promotions that took place in 2013, the Ombudsman said that the process resulted in a screen to achieved ‘a desired outcome’.

The Malta Independent publishes an interview with Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana who said that Gozo Channel ships are deteriorating faster because they are being put to more frequent use. The lifespan of the ships may be shorter than the projected 10 years.

L-Orizzont quotes General Workers Union Secretary General Josef Bugeja who insisted on the introduction of ‘equal pay for equal work’ to guarantee that people doing the same jobs are remunerated at the same rate.

In-Nazzjon says that the Nationalist Party applied pressure on the government to abandon plans to re-open the Qortin dumping site in Xagħra, Gozo. The paper says the site was first closed by a Nationalist government to be rehabilitated and turned into public space.

In another story, L-Orizzont quotes Education Minister Evarist Bartolo who said that the education system in Malta could learn from the Finnish model and apply innovative techniques to the learning process.
