These are the stories from Saturday’s newspapers:

The Times leads with a report by Eurofund indicating that the increase in minimum wage across EU countries was lowest in Malta. The hourly rate of minimum wages went up from €4.25 to €4.33, significantly lower than second from bottom Portugal.

The Malta Independent covers the inauguration of the American University of Malta in Cospicua’s Dock 1 on Friday. Prime Minister Joseph Msucat said that if the university does not reach a target of 4,000 students by 2029, facilities will be returned to the governemnt.

The Times quotes the Prime Minister who insisted that the AUM has, so far, respected the conditions set out by government including on the number of students enrolled in courses. The paper says there are currently fewer than 100 students registered at the university.

The Malta Independent carries another story related to the controversial university, reporting that former Allied Newspapers managing director Adrian Hillman sits on the board of trustees of AUM representing the government of Malta.

L-Orizzont speaks to employees engaged with a manufacturing contractor who said they are paid some €7,000 less annually than colleagues engaged directly with the company. The sources said they are face complete uncertainty, employed on six-month contracts.

In-Nazzjon quotes PN Leader Adrian Delia who said women must be an integral part of society at all levels. Delia was addressing a conference organised by the party to mark International Women’s Day.

L-Orizzont says the economy registered a 6.6 percent growth rate during 2018, with a GDP increase of almost 9 percent over the previous year. The paper says growth was spurred by local demand, rising by some 8.5 percent in terms of volume.

In-Nazzjon reports on the electoral manifesto published b the European Socialists which declares that safe and legal abortion should be considered a right for all women across the EU. The paper says that a vote for the Socialists in the upcoming MEP elections is a vote for abortion.
