Cyprus closes down schools, ban mass gathering and lock down hospitals after first CoVid-19 cases confirmed

After becoming the last EU country to report confirmed cases of COVID-19, Cyprus has followed the example of other countries in the bloc and closed down schools, banned mass gatherings and locked down two hospitals to try to prevent an outbreak.

On Monday the Republic of Cyprus reported its first two confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, meaning that all 27 European Union member states have now reported infections.

Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou said the two cases were both Cypriot men who had recently travelled home from overseas, and had been among dozens of people tested.

The Turkish Cypriot authorities have announced new measures to contain the spread of coronavirus including suspending some charter flights until April 1 and prohibiting groups of more than 10 from crossing from the government controlled areas for excursions or pilgrimages  until March 15.

They have also closed all educational institutions of all levels until Sunday and given instructions for schools and school buses to be disinfected.
