A woman who disappeared 11 years ago is likely to have been killed in her apartment before her body was dismembered and transported to Valletta in her own car.
Her former boyfriend, John Paul Charles Woods, 39, is the main suspect in the case. On Monday he was jailed for seven years for a hold-up in a shop in Gzira last week that sparked the investigation into the 11 year mystery. Police found human remains in Valletta last Saturday after Mr Woods claimed he had hidden some of her body parts there.
Over the weekend, it emerged that Woods may have been connected to the disappearance of 25-year-old Charlene Farrugia, 11 years ago. The Farrugia disappearance was not brought up in court this morning.
The shocking details emerged as officers investigate what happened to 25-year-old Charlene Farrugia, who went missing in November 2008. Sources say Mr Woods, who was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he revealed details about the case, is helping the police with the investigations. Intense interrogations over the past few days led officers to gather more information.
Speaking to sources close to the investigation, One News reported that Woods is expected to be charged with the murder once DNA testing to identify the victim are concluded.
The remains are being tested against DNA swabs taken from her relatives. The tests are being carried out locally.
Days after the discovery of the corpse remains of Charlene Farrugia, Charlene Farrugia’s sister expressed her appreciation for the solidarity shown to her and her family.
Taking to Facebook, she thanked all those who showed solidarity Facebook and who offered help and prayers during this difficult.
She also thanked Archpriest of Zebbug Fr Daniel Cardona as well as the police.
In an interview back in 2010, Noemi had told Style on Sunday magazine that she and Charlene, a former a carer at residential home Dar tal-Providenza, had been inseparable.
We were always together. We did everything together, I loved her truly and still do; she is my younger sister and I was always very protective of her.”
In the interview, which was distributed with The Sunday Times of Malta, Ms Farrugia said her and Charlene had drifted apart when her younger sister had started dating a man with a long criminal record.
“My parents and I felt that he wasn’t trustworthy but Charlene couldn’t accept this. She left my parents’ home and moved in with him,” she had told the magazine.
Ms Farrugia also recounts how her sister had once ended up in hospital after getting into a heated argument with this unnamed boyfriend.
From that incident on, contact between Charlene and her parents became sporadic.
A few days before her disappearance, Charlene’s car was taken by the police but she managed to get it back. It was the last time that she was seen.
