Drunk woman arrested in Stansted after allegedly “rushing to cockpit” of Jet2 aircraft, sparking fears of hijack incident

A woman has been arrested after allegedly “rushing the cockpit” of a Jet2 aircraft before being restrained, forcing it to return to Stansted Airport.

RAF Typhoon jets were scrambled to intercept a Jet2 plane tonight after a “drunk passenger” allegedly tried to open the aircraft door.

It caused an loud bang which has been heard as far as 18 miles away in Chelmsford, Essex, reports the Mirror.

Sources on  Twitter  claimed the RAF sent two typhoon jets from their base in Coningsby, Lincolnshire, to escort a plane to Stansted after a passenger became disruptive.

The 25-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of two assaults and endangering an aircraft, BBC News says. According to several reports she appeared to be heavily intoxicated before the incident.

The Bishop Stortford Police Twitter account said: “Large number of 999 calls coming in about a loud explosion. We have liaised with @EssexPoliceUK who are confirming that this is a sonic boom from a passing aircraft.
