Right-winger Ivan Duque, who intends to reform the peace pact with the FARC ex-guerrilla, won the first round of the Presidential election in Colombia on Sunday. He didn’t obtain an absolute majority. This means that there is the need of another ballot with the leftist Gustavo Petro, who promises economic and social changes.
In the first presidential vote since the signing of the peace agreement, Duque obtained 39.14 percent of the votes and Petro achieved 25.09 percent, according to the almost complete calculations of the National Registry.
Since none won more than 50 percent, they will have to define the presidency in a second round on June 17 and the alliances will be decisive.
The third place was obtained by the independent mathematician Sergio Fajardo, with 23.73 percent of the votes; followed by former center-right president Germán Vargas Lleras with 7.28 percent and Liberal Party candidate Humberto De La Calle with 2.06 percent, according to official data.
