EasyJet withdraws bid for Alitalia

Easyjet has abandoned talks to join a consortium that would have bid for Italian carrier Alitalia.

The budget airline had been considering teaming up with Italy’s state-controlled railway Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and Delta Air Lines of the US.

EasyJet said it “remains committed to Italy as a key market for the company, where it currently carries 18.5m passengers every year and employs 1400 pilots and crew, all on local contracts”.

Luigi Di Maio, leader of the Five Star Movement, and also deputy prime minister and minister for economic development, said earlier this month that the plan for Ferrovie dello Stato to invest in Alitalia alongside partners from the private sector was still being drawn up, and that he was confident it would go ahead.
