Edinburgh lifts ban on liquids over 100ml

Edinburgh is the latest airport in the UK to lift the hand luggage ban on liquids over 100ml.

Travellers will now be able to take two-litre containers through the security gates after two extra lanes and eight scanners worth £24m were installed.

It’s the first airport in Scotland to change the rule, following Birmingham’s example. Sky News reports that Heathrow Terminal 2 was also recently allowing bags with liquids over 100ml, as long as they were kept in bags, along with electronics.

“A whole generation of travellers have only known the 100ml rule to be the case, so it really is a momentous day as we become the first airport in Scotland to lift the rule since it was introduced in 2006,” said Edinburgh Airport chief executive Gordon Dewar.

“But it is important that passengers continue to check with the situation at their return airport as not all airports will be moving away from 100ml just yet.”

There’s no limit to the number of containers inside hand luggage – and they can stay there through security, too.

Large electricals, such as iPads, tablets and laptops, can now also stay in hand luggage.
