An elderly couple were killed when floodwaters flipped their car over in Castilla La Mancha during a violent storm that brought heavy rain, floods and a tornado to the Balearic islands and Spain’s north-eastern coast, with Valencia and Alicante most affected.

Nearby, in the Valencia region, dozens of people had to be evacuated when at least two rivers burst their banks.

The ‘gota fria’ phenomenon is affecting the Mediterranean coast with strong winds and rainfalls of 100 liters per square meter affecting especially Valencia and Murcia. Murcia’s regional Government ordered the closure of schools in the region.
