EPA’s Eye In The Sky: Konya, Turkey

Hundreds of sinkholes (also known as dolines, and ‘obruk’ in Turkish) can be found in the Karapınar area in Konya province, Turkey’s Central Anatolia region.

In recent years, intensive agriculture and irrigation practices have contributed to drastically reducing surface and groundwater resources causing deeper earth layers to collapse.

According to the Obruk Research and Application Center, the number of sinkholes recorded in Konya by the end of 2022 has exceeded 2,500.
