Mount Etna is exhibiting intense Strombolian activity at its summit craters, accompanied by a strong emission of volcanic ash, according to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), Etna Observatory.
Experts monitoring the volcano through visual and thermal surveillance reported that the height of the ash plume could not immediately be determined. In response, the observatory issued a red VONA (Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation), the highest-level alert for air traffic.
Despite the ongoing eruption, operations at Catania’s Vincenzo Bellini International Airport remain unaffected, with full flight activity continuing.
