Flight cancellations continued at Malta International Airport on Wednesday morning as an ash cloud from Sicily’s Mount Etna drifted into the flight path to Malta, extending disruption that began a day earlier and affected both Malta and eastern Sicily.
Nineteen flights were cancelled on Tuesday, causing significant disruption for passengers travelling during the busy holiday season. Among the Wednesday morning cancellations were a Swiss/KM Malta Airlines service to Zurich and a Jet2.com flight to Edinburgh, while Transavia also cancelled an afternoon service scheduled to arrive from Paris Orly. Several other flights were delayed.
A pilot reported that the ash cloud over Malta was clearly visible from high altitude. Some aircraft were approaching the island from a more westerly direction and flying at lower levels than usual, indicating operational adjustments to avoid the affected airspace.

Malta International Airport advised passengers to check the status of their flights before travelling to the airport. A spokesperson said that passengers whose flights had been cancelled were being assisted by ground handlers to make alternative arrangements before entering the departures area.
Mount Etna, located about 220 kilometres north of Malta, is Europe’s most active volcano. Ash clouds from the volcano have occasionally forced aircraft travelling to and from Malta to alter their routes, but a direct impact on operations at Malta International Airport is considered uncommon.
The disruption also affected activities on the ground in Malta. Attard’s Soċjeta Mużikali la Stella Levantina announced that it had postponed a planned fireworks display linked to the Sta Marija feast because of the ash cloud and the airport restrictions. The fireworks launch site is located close to the runway approach path, and the society said the decision had been taken in consultation with the authorities, stressing that safety considerations had priority.
Meanwhile, eastern Sicily experienced another day of severe air transport disruption. Etna’s eruptive activity, combined with strong upper-level winds carrying volcanic ash along approach corridors, led to the closure of Catania-Fontanarossa and Comiso airports.
The suspension of operations at Catania once again highlighted the vulnerability of Sicily’s air transport system during the height of the tourist season. Catania airport, situated only a few kilometres from the volcano, has already been forced to close several times in recent weeks, with flights cancelled or diverted to Palermo.
Italian aviation authorities emphasised that volcanic ash represents a serious threat to flight safety. Circulars issued by the National Agency for Civil Aviation (ENAC) state that suspended ash particles can reduce visibility, damage aircraft surfaces and potentially compromise engines and onboard systems.
For that reason, SAC, the company managing Catania airport, has applied strict safety protocols in coordination with aviation authorities, including temporary closure of affected airspace and airport operations. Decisions are being updated continuously on the basis of ash-dispersion models and weather conditions, particularly the direction and intensity of the wind, which determine whether ash reaches operational areas even during relatively limited eruptive phases.
Bulletins issued by the Etna Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) between Aug. 8 and Aug. 11 had already indicated persistent volcanic activity requiring ongoing monitoring, suggesting that the current disruption is part of a prolonged episode rather than a single isolated eruption.
The consequences for travellers have included cascading delays, preventive cancellations and numerous flight diversions, creating knock-on effects across domestic Italian and wider European air networks. The simultaneous disruption at Catania and Comiso significantly reduced the operational flexibility normally available in southeastern Sicily.
The situation has renewed debate about the fragility of transport links on the island. When Catania airport is forced to stop operations, eastern Sicily’s principal aviation hub becomes effectively inaccessible, creating wider logistical problems involving stranded passengers, missed connections and overcrowded terminals.
A similar emergency occurred earlier this summer. Between July 5 and July 7, 2026, another eruptive phase prompted the Sicilian Region to activate extraordinary bus services to Palermo and Trapani and introduce special trains along the Palermo–Messina–Catania route to assist stranded travellers. Those contingency measures could be required again if the ash alert persists.
Passengers travelling through Malta International Airport, Catania-Fontanarossa or Comiso have been advised to monitor airline and airport updates closely as volcanic activity and weather conditions continue to evolve.
