EU Calls for Adherence to International Law Amid Maduro’s Arrest

The European Union has called for strict adherence to international law following the announcement by U. S. President Donald Trump regarding the apprehension of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro early Saturday morning.

Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that Maduro and his wife “will soon face the full wrath of American justice” after they were transported out of Venezuela subsequent to a U. S. operation that President Trump referred to as a “large- scale strike.”

EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas expressed that the EU “is closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela” following the detention of Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores.

“The EU has consistently maintained that Mr. Maduro’ s legitimacy is unattainable and has advocated for a peaceful transition,” Kallas articulated in a posting on X on Saturday.

“Under all circumstances, the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter must be upheld. We call for restraint,” she added.

Kallas further mentioned that she had communicated with U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the EU ambassador in Caracas.

Rubio conveyed to several U. S. legislators that Maduro and his wife had been “arrested by U. S. personnel to stand trial on criminal charges in the United States.” In a statement on X, Bondi declared that “two alleged international narco traffickers” are to face justice under an indictment in the Southern District of New York.
When questioned on the Venezuela operation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded with a chuckle. “Well, if this can be done to dictators, the U. S. knows who could be next,” Zelenskyy remarked to journalists in Kyiv on Saturday evening.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola expressed approval of Maduro’ s removal.

“People in Venezuela deserve to live freely after years of oppression. As the European Parliament has consistently stated, we do not regard Nicolás Maduro as the legitimate, democratically elected leader of Venezuela,” Metsola posted on X.

“The forthcoming hours and days will be pivotal,” she emphasised.

The European Parliament has persistently called for unwavering respect for international law, support for democratic principles, and recognition of the legitimate will of Venezuela’ s populace,” Metsola added.
Additionally, the prime ministers of Italy and Spain emphasised their close watch on developments in Venezuela.
“We urge all parties to de- escalate tensions and act responsibly.

Respect for international law and the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter is imperative,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated on X.
