EU has agreed Brexit delay until January 2020

EU Council President Donald Tusk says the bloc has agreed to delay the Brexit deadline until 31 January 2020 at the latest.

The decision will now be “formalised through a written procedure”, he tweeted on Monday morning.

The delay decision came after a meeting of EU27 ambassadors, and days of speculation over whether French President Emmanuel Macon would veto the idea.

But that opposition appears to have been dropped because of the growing chance of a general election being held before Christmas.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked for the delay after MPs forced him to in a bid to avoid no-deal on 31 October.

It comes as MPs prepare to vote on proposals by Boris Johnson for an early general election on 12 December.

The SNP and Lib Dems have also proposed an election on 9 December.
