The EU Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly announced that she set up an inquiry into the rapid appointment of Martin Selmayr to the role of European Commission secretary-general.

Earlier this month, she said she had sent a letter to President Jean-Claude Juncker asking for “all documents” about Selmayr’s appointment from between September 1, 2017 to April 18, 2018 and for the Commission to respond to several questions about the appointment.

One of the powers that I have and that the [European] Parliament doesn’t have is the power of access and inspection of records,” she said. “I did follow all of this while it was going through Parliament but I’m not aware that that many records were actually released.” “I can’t say what the result of our enquiry will be but it will make suggestions on how these things should be handled in the future,” she added.
