This is a summary of Politico’s and FT projections of the voting today in Estonia:
Estonia – The Projections
If the turnout of 36.52% is maintained in this vote, Politico predicts ER will beat second placed SDE by 6,265 votes. That is just 1.09% of the 574,380 expected non voters.
Estonians elect six representatives.
Estonia – The Issues
Estonia surprised almost everybody by forming a government that included the far-right nationalist Conservative People’s party (EKRE).
The European elections will be the first chance for voters to show their views of the new coalition. The signs are that the Centre party of prime minister Juri Ratas are likely to get punished for teaming up with the populists.
Liberals fret that Estonia’s hard-won image as the poster child of eastern Europe with its largely digital state and good education is being put at risk by a party whose leaders have used white supremacist symbols and want the few immigrants in the Baltic country gone. (FT)
