European Parliament prepares 1,000 meals for homeless

The kitchens of the European Parliament in Brussels have been reopened during the pandemic to provide free meals for homeless people and frontline workers in health services in the area. EP staff are preparing over 1,000 packed meals every day that are then distributed with the help of social sector associations: Restò du Coeur Saint Gilles, Douche FLUX, Croix Rouge, CPAS Ixelles.

People in vulnerable situations, including those without a home, are highly susceptible the effects of the coronavirus emergency.

The Parliament has also put its official fleet of vehicles to the disposal of volunteers to deliver the meals and transport doctors, nurses, and social workers from their homes to the hospitals in the region.

EP President Davide Sassoli visited the kitchens on Wednesday to follow the preparation process by the staff. He hailed volunteers for their dedication and said that the initiative is a “good example of the Parliament’s public spirit.”

Members of the European Parliament are currently working from their homes and plenary sessions are being held virtually. Employees have also been instructed to work remotely and in March the EP introduced a 1.5 days-a-week to protect its staff.
