European Security Talks: Progress on US-Led Peace Plan

European national security advisers met in Kiev on Saturday. They attended a forum focused on peace talks. These talks were regarding Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Negotiations continued between Ukraine and its European partners, with discussions centered on a 20-point US-led peace plan. Representatives from Canada, NATO, and several European nations attended.

Zelenskyy posted on X that progress had been made on security guarantees, reconstruction, and the establishment of a rebuilding framework. He also mentioned upcoming meetings in the United States.

Umerov posted on X about a busy day focused on security and economic matters. He worked on primary documents. He coordinated next steps with partners. He also shared photos with EU advisers.

Ukrainian forces would serve as the primary line of defence. This is according to Ukrainian negotiator Oleksandr Bevz’s explanation of security guarantee arrangements with EU countries. Additionally, European-led troops would be deployed within Ukraine. The United States would also provide security assurances.

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister, Taras Kachka, made a statement on Saturday. He announced that international partners have agreed on an economic support package for Ukraine. The package is valued at approximately €682 billion over the next decade. The World Bank, the IMF, and the EU calculated this amount. It is intended to address damage compensation, reconstruction, and economic stability. The package includes a €170 billion growth “booster.” This is tied to reforms necessary for Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

Ukrainian Economy Minister Oleksii Sobolev said public grants and concessional loans will help fund the initiative. The final details will be available in two weeks. On Saturday, Zelenskyy offered Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal the roles of energy minister and first deputy prime minister. On Friday, General Kyrylo Budanov, Ukraine’s military intelligence chief, was appointed as Zelenskyy’s new chief of staff. This change aims to strengthen security, defence, and diplomacy efforts.
