Ex-Trump campaign chief jailed

Paul Manafort, (photo above) the former Trump campaign chairman , was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for tax and bank fraud related to his work advising Ukrainian politicians.

The imprisonment is much less than what was called for under sentencing guidelines. It is the longest sentence to date to come from special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe. Sentencing guidelines called for a 20-year-term, effectively a lifetime sentence .

Manafort still faces the possibility of additional time from his sentencing in a separate case in the District of Columbia, where he pleaded guilty to charges related to illegal lobbying.

He is due to be sentenced in another case next week related to his illegal lobbying.

The charges stem from an inquiry into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election.
